DOE Funding Opportunity: Deep Geothermal Field Tests

The State of Colorado is energized by the latest Notice of Funding Opportunity from the Department of Energy’s Office of Geothermal for deep geothermal field tests and resource characterization. This solicitation represents a pivotal window to catalyze deep geothermal development by building certainty around resource characterization—a critical step in de-risking the future of the industry for Colorado.
This federal solicitation requires a 20% non-federal cost-sharing requirement. A letter of intent to apply is due March 27, and the application deadline is April 30, 2026. The State of Colorado seeks to support developer applications for this solicitation, but will not serve as the lead applicant.
The CO Department of Energy is inviting prospective applicants considering applying for Colorado projects to join representatives from the Governor’s Office, Colorado Energy Office, Energy and Carbon Management Commission, and Department of Natural Resources for an Open Q&A Session at 11:00am MT on Thursday, March 12 to discuss how the State of Colorado can support your applications and the resources we have available to ensure a competitive submission.
